Now wasn’t this remarkably nostalgic?
Natsume sighed, shading his eyes from the blistering heat of the sun as he poured a bottle of mineral water down onto the head of a sweltering kappa, dizzy of heatstroke.
The boy had been walking back to his hut after a short trip to Polis when he’d passed by the water demon sitting on the ashen road, looking as if any moment it would pass out. He’d contemplated the thought of just walking onward, before quickly dismissing it. The kappa reminded him of the one he’d helped out once upon a time, back when he’d still been in their small countryside town on Earth. He didn’t have the heart to ignore the poor thing.
Nyanko-sensei had not accompanied him on his little shopping trip, much preferring to wander about by himself. Still, Natsume had no doubt he’d turn up sooner or later in the course of the day. He was his bodyguard, after all. He had to protect the Book of Friends from other youkai who wished to steal it—if there were any in this world that did. The Book of Friends didn’t seem to be of much value here, it seemed.
“You should be more careful next time,” he admonished gently, screwing the cap of the bottle closed and tucking it inside his bag. “It isn’t good to stay out here when it’s so hot. What if I hadn’t seen you?”

The kappa gave him a grateful look, before bowing. “Thank you, Natsume-sama! I’ll be more careful next time, I promise!”
Natsume sighed again as he watched it scamper away into the recesses of Gilneas forest. Standing up from his squatting position, he dusted the dirt off his knees and hitched the strap of his messenger bag higher over his shoulder.
It really is hot today, he thought to himself, lifting a hand to wipe away the sweat on his forehead. Seeing as he was rather susceptible to heat, it would be best to stay out of the sun and get home as quickly as possible.
Nodding to himself, he made to turn around and resume his walk home—before he caught sight of a figure watching from afar. Natsume bit back a yelp of surprise. He was sure he was alone just a minute ago!
Willing himself to calm down, the boy clenched his fist and continued on his way, determined to act as if the earlier incident had never happened. Normal people don’t see kappa, after all—or just youkai in general. To the stranger, it should have looked as if Natsume was emptying his bottle of water on the ground for no apparent reason… and talking to himself. How embarrassing was that? Natsume held back a groan. They probably thought he was a weirdo now.
Izumo was rather enjoying the hot weather, it beat cold weather any way. On such a nice day it seemed to be a waste to stay inside, plus she was getting incredibly sick of being cooped up in those little huts. She hadn’t seen many of her classmates recently either, it was like they’d dropped off the face of the earth…they might have, literally. Rolling her sleeves up she’d briefly entered Gilneas Forest but hadn’t ventured too far in, she intended to go to the lake to soak her feet in, hopefully no monsters would ruin the trip.
She would have made it there in good time too, except something caught her eye. There was some kid she only briefly caught him talking to, well she had to squint. Though she’d never come across one herself that looked like a kappa, what was he doing? Izumo didn’t trust any demons friendly or not, except for her own and even then they’d turn on her if she lost composure. She only raised an eyebrow, not realising she’d been staring, only until he looked her way then she did she blink.
She gave him a displeased look as he yelped, obviously he hadn’t noticed her then just went on his way. She’d found that weirder than him talking to a demon, demons were a regular part of her life after all. Still she was kind of curious to know how he could see demons or spirits.

“Hey!” She called out sharply. “That was a kappa just now wasn’t it? I’ve never seen one before, only in text books” she asked to confirm what she thought she saw. Usually she would have just walked off herself but really things were so boring around here, seeing a demon was somewhat more interesting.
